How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The use of media technologies has been vital in the production of both my main and ancillary texts. Throughout production i have used software such as final cut pro and Photoshop to help edit and shape my final product, whilst i have also used things like the internet in order to collect research and aid in the inspiration/planning of my product.

The first piece of technology i used was the website YouTube. By using YouTube i was able to watch music videos from the genre i wanted to portray and this allowed me to see and record the typical conventions used throughout the genre. For example via YouTube i was able to watch several Ed Sheeran videos in which he is pictured singing whilst playing his instrument. This then gave me the idea to include this in my own music video and use it as a recurring convention. I then repeated this process with other videos from the singer-songwriter genre until i was able to to visualise my own idea for a music video and start to plan it via story-boarding. By using YouTube i was also able to look at the comments of these videos in order to gain an understanding of the target audience. This helped me to shape the design of my digipak and magazine advert to then appeal to this audience. The comments on videos of the original song massively helped me with my research as i was able to gather opinions from a range of different people from around the world. This combined with my primary research provided me with the information needed to optimise my products for my target audience. For example, i decided to include the "real" relationship in my video and make it seem more of a personal video because of the comments i had read on the original video.

During the construction of my music video the most integral technology i used was a video camera. Through this i was able to record the various shots and angles used for my music video. By combining this with a tripod i was able to record steady shots and because the camera is handheld i was then able to quickly move and adjust it for any desired shot. By using the pause/record it allowed me to easily record individual segments without having to stop recording entirely. After all the required footage was recorded i could then upload it via a USB cable to an apple computer. From here i was able to edit my footage and audio together using another important program: Final Cut Pro.

Earlier on my blog i explained what i had learnt by completing a preliminary task in final cut pro in which me and 2 others filmed and edited a short segment to the song "3 lions". I used this acquired knowledge and applied it to the editing process of my own music video. After uploading my footage i was able to select various clips and drag them into the view in order for me to cut out the required shot using the "mark in" and "mark out" tool. From here i could then drag the desired cropped clip onto the timeline where i then spent time trying to match the lip-syncing from my video to the actual song lyrics. By having the audio of my song already on the timeline i was then able to determine when to change shots in the video due to hearing the beat of the song. By cutting to the beat i was able to make my video seem more realistic and therefore more effective. The entirety of my video was edited and constructed in final cut pro which shows my reliance on it to deliver a successful product.

For both of my ancillary products i used the program Photoshop. As expressed in an earlier blog post i also performed an ancillary task in order to develop my skills in the program and then translate these skills into the production of my texts. After gathering the various images i wanted to use for both my digipak and magazine advert i was able to do things like cut out the images using the magic wand tool in conjunction with the feather tool to place a smooth looking cut out of the artists head onto each of the products. I also demonstrated earlier on my blog how i came about making an image which breaks the artists head into seperate puzzle pieces by merging the layers of different images. All of this was accomplished in Photoshop and so this and Final Cut Pro proved to be extremely useful in the production of all 3 of my texts.

When it comes to the evaluation i once again turned to Youtube as that is where i uploaded my finished music video in order to showcase it on my blog. From here i received comments on my video about what people liked/disliked about my video. From these comments i was able to gauge the general reaction to my video and whether it was successful or not. Since Youtube is integrated with Google, people who commented/viewed my music video on Youtube was then able to share it through their Google + circles. Another way to judge the success of my music video is through the likes/dislikes it has. I also used social media sites to receive opinions on my finished products. I was able to ask people via Facebook what they thought of the finished product and so on.

For other aspects of my production cycle such as story boarding and primary research, i relied on paper copies so that i could manually draw the shots i wanted/record my results. I did however then take pictures of these on my Iphone and uploaded them to a computer in order for these to be placed on to my blog. I found this to be much quicker than scanning each page in as i could easily line up different pages, take a photo and move on to another page. I was then able to transfer the images in bulk across to a computer where i could then upload them onto my blog.

Another major technology i used during all my stages was the blog itself. The blog made it easy to document the various stages of the production cycle as well as provide a platform to neatly showcase all of my work in an easy user friendly format.

Overall media technology has played an integral part to the overall production cycle of all three of my products. The quality of my finished texts would be no-where near the standard they currently are without the use of said technology.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Through the use of things like social networking site and personally speaking to friends and family i have been able to collect many comments both positive and negative regarding my texts.

The majority of feedback on my finished music video was that it was well constructed in that for the most part the artist singing synced well with the music. Also that i cut accurately to the beat so that it represented a real music video. Other comments have also told me that my music video was successful in sharing/using conventions used by other texts which belong to the same genre. When a person was asked to name a similar text to my music video they responded with an artist who acted as an inspiration for my work. This therefore shows a massive success as i set out to recreate the style and look of an Ed Sheeran video and my final product was then compared to one.

People also liked the various effects i had included in my video. For example a transition in which the camera tilts up and back down again and in the time that has happened one of the actors has switched with another actor, was received well among the people i asked. They thought that it was a nice touch to the video and so i have learnt that my camerawork was sufficient enough to please and satisfy my target audience.

Although this technique was received well i did get some constructive criticism in that someone thought that footage did not sync 100% when tilting the camera up and down. I have therefore learnt that if i were to perform this technique again i would make sure to keep the tripod in the exact same position and tilt the camera in a fluid motion up and down allowing myself time to correctly the ending and beginning of both clips so that they match perfectly.

My music video was also praised for including appropriate imagery linked with the lyrics as this is commonly seen in other music videos so it makes my video look authentic as it follows the conventions needed to look real.

Although i received a lot less feedback on my ancillary products due to my focus on the music video i also received praise in that it was said that both my digipak and magazine advert shared the same house style and so a strong link was formed between the texts. Also that the picture of the artist on the front helped to then link it with the music video.

Overall i feel that my audience feedback has confirmed my texts success as it has been able to follow the conventions of other music videos as well as containing neat editing which has accurately matched the lip-syncing with the lyrics as well as different pieces of footage being cut between each other on the beat of the song.

How effective is the combination of my main text and my ancillary texts?

In which ways does my media product use, develop, challenges forms and conventions of real media texts.

It was my aim during the production of all three of my texts that they would be seen as realistic pieces that could pass for actual products in real life. It is because of this that i have therefore tried my hardest to adopt and use such conventions so that my texts do not appear as abstract or overly different. Although being unique is important when it comes to producing a piece of work, i factored in the point that my audience is a very mainstream audience and so they would be comfortable with the conventions i have used.

Throughout my analysis of my 3 texts i will be referring to other real life texts such as the song "Lego house" by Ed Sheeran, the song "lightning bolt" by Jake Bugg and various other adverts/digipaks of artists previously mentioned throughout my blog.

When first planning my music video one of the first decisions i made was to have a heavy emphasis on the artist rather than a specific story line. This is because the most common feature of a singer-songwriters music video is that the artist themselves is featured, if not the focal point. Although "Lego House" appears as an exception in that it turns out that the person pictured isn't actually representing Ed Sheeran, the audience is led to believe that it is actually him and the actor portraying him is featured in nearly every shot of the music video. This shows the emphasis on having the artist in the actual video. I therefore ensured that Callum ,the aritst in my music video, was pictured in nearly every shot of the video.

Linked with the artist is the inclusion of an instrument the artist is able to play. This is a common theme found with singer-songwriters as it is often how they started their careers by learning to play an instrument. To maintain this desired image i therefore thought it crucial to have my artist playing the keyboard along with the song.

Although there isnt a live audience my music video can still be considered a performance clip due to the footage of my artist singing the song. This is the most common style of music videos as their purpose is to not only promote the song but the artist as well. This also links with why a picture of my artist is featured on both the digipak and magazine advert.

Most bands base their various album covers around certain images/themes because they collectively have to come up with an idea to represent all of their music in the album. For a solo artist however it is easier to show an image of themselves as that is how they will best promote themselves. This is the reasoning for
including the image of Callums face on both ancillary texts. Imagery is still used on digipaks solo artist or not and this is why i chose to add the multicoloured puzzle piece background. I chose this because like other album art (notably Jason Derulo's "Tattoos") the images on the cover heavily link with the title of the album itself. I thought puzzle pieces provided a strong link with the title "Pieces of Me" which is why i included such a vivid image on/around my digipak.

The reasoning behind the amateurish style to my digipak design is that i had inspiration from the album "Loose Change" which has the impression that he created and drew the design himself. Although his style is heavily focused around the fact that he started very small and was poor for the majority of the time he was performing before getting "big" i wanted to share this same style and signer-songwriters often focus on how they've "made it" but started with nothing. This is why i further developed this design of being created by the artist as the loose change album was hand drawn whereas i have created my image on a computer using programs like Photoshop.

I have also used the conventions shared between digipak and magazine advert as the magazine advert is usually just a blown up version of the cover art for the album. I replicated this by increasing the size of and extending the multicoloured puzzle pattern on my magazine advert as well as including the same font/image of the artist. To coincide with other magazine advert i also included a release date as well as the logo of the record label my artist is signed to. These are all necessities when regarding a magazine advert as the purpose of it is to advertise a product and you cant do that if you do not know when the product is being released.

Overall i have tried to stick to the tried and tested conventions used by similar artists in order to replicate their own success but with my product. The convention are familiar with my target audience so it appeals to them and my products do not appear to artistic or abstract so that only my target audience may enjoy them. The broadness of my products allowed them to be received by a mass audience even though a small percentage of this is being targeted.

Audience Feedback

*Some feedback was received prior to the publication of my music video. It was shown to family/friends via a video recording of the near completed product during the editing process.

By personally showing my music video to people i was able to receive immediate feedback as well as having the ability to follow up on certain comments to then gain more specific answers regarding things like conventions, camera angles and lip syncing. Although the quality was not up to the standard of the finished final product. By showing people the unfinished version i was then able to adjust and change some of the editing/effects of the footage to further meet their needs and so that it became a more successful product.

The first person i showed my music video to was my sister Emma. I showed it to her first as she also took media studies as an A-level and therefore would be able to comment on things like the camera angles used.
Upon watching it she said that "It matches the style of other music videos in that there's a heavy focus on the artist and its a nice touch to include the flashbacks to make the video appear more like a story with a narrative rather than just general imagery matched with the lyrics."

As a follow up question i then asked what kind of artist did it most remind her off.
She replied with "It reminds me of an artist like Ed Sheeran as he is shown playing his own instrument and the video is personal to him as its pictured as his relationship."
I feel this proves the success of my music video as this was the inspiration/goal for my music video. Therefore to be compared to the style of video i originally based my idea off of is a major positive.

I also received direct feedback in the form of a comment on the video itself.
This comment expresses both a positive and negative with my music video. As this comment was received after the final version of my music video was created i was not able to act upon it and further improve it. I will however be able to take this into account in future projects where i will spend more time in trying to sync my footage with both the lyrics of the song as well as the beat. I will also take more care when trying to match up transitions within my product such as the graphic match.

Another way of gaining audience feedback was by posting the link to my music video on my twitter.
Here people who followed me could then watch it and decide to favourite or re-tweet it. For people who did this i then contacted them through twitter to obtain a follow up response.

One of the people i asked for a response was a friend called Scott. I had noticed that after watching my video he then shared the link on his own twitter page meaning that his followers would be able to watch it too - further expanding my audience and letting my video gain popularity through word of mouth. After asking for an opinion as to why he liked the music video he responded:

This comment shows that my music video is appropriate and matches the style/genre well. A person like Scott was not part of my intended target audience, however this comment shows appreciation for the music video which means it has the potential to appeal to a far wider audience than first expected, even though it was engineered to appeal to a demographic which involves teenage girls.

Evidence of Scott sharing the video on his own twitter profile

Other comments i received through twitter. Although mostly positive, attention has once again been raised regarding the transition. I will therefore take extra care in the future when attempting to recreate such effects.

I also looked for opinions on Facebook so that i covered as many social media platforms as possible as that is what is very popular with my target audience and therefore it is where they would be most likely to watch my video. One of the comments from a friend on Facebook was this:

Once again the opinion is positive as with most feedback. From this i can conclude that my music video has been successful in that it has been praised when it comes to the conventions of the singer/songwriter genre. The music video also been described as "genuine" and "realistic" showing that although made by an amateur it appears as a normal music video which is a positive in itself as it proves that there is no dodgy camerawork or not thought through segments to the video.

The only notable criticism is that a certain transition within the video does not sync perfectly between cuts. I will therefore make sure to take this advice in to account and revise my technique when planning to film these sot of shots a swell as making sure i cut at the right time in each piece of footage so that it matches up appropriately.

I received less feedback on my ancillary product as i felt the music video held preference and would be the focal point of my project. I did however ask some people about my ancillary products and they responded with:

This shows that my ancillary products were also successful as they provide a strong link between each other by sharing the same house style and content.

Props/Locations

This is the camera i used to record all of the footage for my music video.

This is the bipod i used when filming in order to steady my shots and make them not have a shaky feel to them. This made the music video seem more professional.

My personal keyboard which was used as the artist's keyboard in the music video. Although never plugged in during filming i made sure not to include the off interface in the finished music video to maintain the illusion that the artist was playing the instrument as well as singing the song.

All filming took place in this house. The living room, kitchen and car port were all used as filming locations. I ensured that the filming was all in the same area so that the link could be made that this was the artist's house, therefore reinforcing the attempted personal feel to the video.

Sketched Storyboard

The following pictures contain the sketched storyboards i used to plan out each shot for my music video. Due to my poor drawing skills the figures are very rough by the type of camera angle for each shot is how i want to record each section of my music video. I will try to follow what i have planned when filming however if i decide to make any changes they will be noted.

EDIT: Now that filming has been completed i can confirm that my storyboard was not followed entirley. Even though the majority of scenes were filmed as planned using the desired camera angles/positioning i decided to a more drawn out section of the artist singing before the fade at the end. Earlier in the video there are lots of short cuts showing different perspectives of the artist singing so i thought a longer sequence was needed as a closing piece of footage before a fade to black. I also decided to add an effect for every piece of footage that was set in the past and featured the girlfriend. This was to emphasis the difference between present and past and so that the audience can distinguish that the artist is no longer with her and those segments took place a while ago.

Commonly used terms

This wordle shows the words I have most commonly used on my media blog. The bigger the word the more times i have said/mentioned it in a previous post. This shows that my blog has a strong emphasis on music albums, videos and artists.

Jake Bugg Music Video Analysis

Throughout the majority of his video's Jake Bugg employs certain conventions in order to portray and represent his character and style of music/genre.

What is first evident in the video is that a lot of screen time is given to Jake himself and so the focus is mostly on him and the various grainy images of town in which the audience suspects he is from. Close ups are largely used to show Jake singing along and so in this respect the video can be labelled as a performance clip although there is no noted audience in the video. The grainy images of a bustling town are used to convey the backdrop into which Jake became famous. It is to show where he writes/performs his songs and makes the video feel more personal - suiting his genre as singer-songwriters often portray themselves as solitary characters (as seen with Ed Sheeran and Ben Howard) who focus on their roots.

The shakiness of the camera also hints towards a home video/hand-held style of filming which once again adds a more personal touch - away from big budget productions and keeping more down to earth.

A range of mid/long shots are used to show Jake either carrying or playing his guitar further reinforcing the lone ranger vibe as he is pictured walking with his guitar case in a busy town square. This connotes images of him earning a living playing in the streets which once again link back to his roots as a perhaps struggling artist. This can also be referenced to the poor quality recording as someone who is struggling to make a living would not be able to afford a high end digital recorder.

By using the knowledge i have gained into the typical conventions of a solo artist music video i will try to apply some to my own music video. I will try to recreate the focus of the solo artist, revolving the entire video around them with video of them singing/playing along to the song. As i plan to film most of my video in a stationary location i will not be able to recreate the jolty action of a handheld camera, I will however try to keep the video personal by filming in a house - implying that it is the artists and that he is rehearsing the song he has written.

Editing my digipak

When editing my digipak I wanted to create an effect where it seemed that Callum's face was a jigsaw puzzle. I was able to do this using the various tools available on Photoshop.

First I opened both images in separate windows and cut them out using the quick selection tool, making sure not to miss any part of each of the pictures.

After transferring both images to my digipak the scale of each of them was off. To deal with this I used the rectangle marquee tool, right clicked and selected "free transform". This allowed me to adjust the size of the shape and my making the picture smaller whilst holding shift I was able to keep the correct size proportions.

Once I had adjusted each of the images sizes I then placed them over each other for reference.

Then by selecting the two separate layers i was able to right click and "merge layers" so that they became a single image. The desired effect of a jigsaw puzzle was then achieved through this and added to the inside cover of my digipak.

Ed Sheeran - Lego House Video Analysis

"Lego House" is a single released from Ed Sheeran's album Plus. I will be exploring the conventions used in the video as well as how these link to artist and genre.

"Lego House" features elements of both a narrative a performance clip as the "artist" is seen mostly throughout the video creating a song as well as him performing the song on his acoustic guitar. The narrative also extends further in that throughout the video the audience is led to believe that Rupert Grint is playing Ed Sheeran whereas it is revealed near the end of the video that he is in fact a possessed fan who wants to be Ed. This narrative creates humour and therefore appeals to the audience. This coupled with the inclusion of a star such as Rupert makes the video successful in that it acts as a selling point for people to then go and watch the video.

The performance elements are shown by the way Rupert lip syncs and sings along with the song, thus effectively performing it - even though it is not on a stage or too a crowd, the performance is directed at you the audience. This is further by supported by him looking into the camera during certain sections of singing.

There is some presence of a televised bard however it is not as clear cut as other music videos. Although the artist is performing the lyrics he is not effectively telling a story at the same time (at least not relating to the video). Instead the premise of the video is that Rupert is an obsessive fan - a completely different narrative to that of the lyrics. Although this does create humour it makes the matching of the lyrics to imagery very difficult to portray.

Overall i feel the humour and surprise of the video combined with with minimal imagery "building of lego toys" can be argued as being successful as the video is then shared by word of mouth as the fans will enjoy it more than other members of the audience who are listening to the artist for the first time. The video works in that respect as a fan base has already been established, however for my video i will aim to keep it more generalised in order for it to be more accessible and enjoyed by a broader audience.

Questionnaire Feedback - Primary Research

Blank copy of my Audience Feedback Questionnaire

 Examples of filled out questionnaires
From the audience feedback I have received I can conclude that the majority of people I handed the questionnaire to (aged 16-18) wanted either a narrative or performance driven music video due to the fact that a story included with the song provides further interest with the song and a reason to watch the music video and so that you get to see the artist perform their song. This appealed to almost all of the people I questioned as they also mentioned that if the music video was driven by a story they would want the protagonist to be a member of the band instead of a seperate actor.
Scores were generally high when it came to asking whether linking imagery and lyrics was important so I will make sure to incorporate this into my own music video.
When asked to name their least/most favourite music video the responses widely varied, however the same reasons appeared. For example one response said that their least favourite music video was "Yonkers by Tyler the Creator". They said that they didn't like it because the video is shot in black and white and the colour-scheme didn't appeal to them. They also said that due to the little action in the video it was bland to watch and therefore they didn't enjoy it.
For my final question i asked what they would expect in a music video by a singer-songwriter and the majority of feedback was geared towards having the artist perform themselves, perhaps playing their instrument as well. This is because it feels more personal (performances were low key and not arena tour style performances) and links with the way a singer-songwriter operates.

Solo Artist Album Cover Analysis

Jason Derulo's album "Tattoos" contains many common features shared with other solo artists' albums. These conventions, although numerous and commonly seen, are very effective at portraying the songs in the album as well as the theme/tone of the album.

One of these conventions is the use of bright colours. These are used to attract people to the album in shops or on websites. This is used for initial interest as the bright colour will be the first thing you see of the album cover. In "Tattoos" the bright yellow background is used to attract the audience as well as the white title and multi-colored tattoos.

Another important convention is the presence of the artist on the cover. This is to make sure the audience sees the connection between the artist and their music. This is seen widely across solo artists and bands. However some artist choose to only provide an image linking the music on their album cover and not a picture of themselves. This may be due to their already established label or a particularly strong image which makes the album easily recognisable. Both of these elements are present in "Tattoos" as the title has been integrated into Derulo's tattoos on his neck. This presents a clear link between title and imagery.

For my album cover I will make sure to include a picture of the artist as well as a piece of imagery which will attempt to link with the title. I will integrate this image with the rest of my digipak, making sure that the colour scheme and art style is matched and consistent throughout.

Album Magazine Advert Analysis

This poster for All Time Low's album "Nothing Personal" contains several factors that link the poster to the album. One of these is that the font used for the band's name and the name of the album is the same on both the poster and the album cover. This helps to generate a link between the two and therefore re-inforces the posters purpose of advertising the album and not as a seperate piece of merchandise. A copy of the album cover is also included aswell as a picture of the badn - which provide further links to the product. At the bottom of the poster there is also a banner which advertises the record company itself - showing other artists/albums  signed to them and saying that they are avaliable to digitally download. Also included is the logo for HMV - showing the reader where they can purchase the album.

The poster for Kanye West's album "Yeezus" differs from the first example in that the primary focus is that of the release of the album - not where to buy it or who is the record company behind it. Once again the font of the album is matched with that on the advert and a copy of the album cover is featured in the centre of the advert. However there is no picture of the artist and it seems quite plain in comparison as it is mostly just black text on a white background. An explanation for this may be that the artist Kanye West is already established as a very successful artist so people will want to buy his album, this poster is just to let people know that there is an album and when it will be released.

The magazine advert for Green Day's album American Idiot also appears quite plain. The font, layout and central image are all taken from the album cover and blown up to suit the proportions of the a4 page. The only difference between the magazine advert and album cover is the placement of the image. Here it has been placed slightly lower and this is to ensure not all the imagery of the advert is placed at top of the page. By purely replicating the album design it makes it very easy for the audience to associate between products and they look near identical. Although it is successful in creating a link between advertisement and product it offers no information as to when it is released or where to buy the album.

When i was your man audience research

By looking at the original music video for the song i am using for my courework i was able to look through the comments to try and distinguish the target audeince for the song/artist. I was able to see that the majority of fans of the song were female with a large portion being teenagers. I was able to gauge the general age of a commenter by looking at their profile picture, the ages were somewhat assumed but i am aiming for a general audience than a specific age group.

These comments demostrate the type of people who enjoy and comment on the song. As you can see they are mostly females who are praising the song for its content rather than its artist - although there were several comments directed at the performance of the artist.

There are however some exceptions to this fan base as shown by the next comment.

Here you can say that a fan of the song is actually a middle aged man - the complete contrast of the majority of listeners. This shows that even though the music is intended to please a certain demographic, it is still somewhat a "pop" song and therefore can and will appeal to the masses. It is the not same level of pop adopted by artists such as Carly Rae Jepsen in which it aims to be catchy enough to gain thousands of hours on music channels and radio stations. Instead it has a main target audience with the potential for other people to enjoy the music who would not normally associate with the song.

By looking through the comments i was also able to see that some fans liked the song because of the personal connection they felt with the lyrics. This shows a seperate fan base in those who can relate to the song and its lyrics. Because of this i will need to reflect this in my video so that it appears more personal and not just a performance video (even though the original video is like this and proves very effective).

I will use the information gathered here to shape my music video and ancillary products to best appeal to this target audience which mainly consists of teenage females.

Digipak Research

Spiritualized is a British rock group who released the album "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space". They focus on produced more "alternate" and "space" sub-genres of rock. Because of their unique artificial style they have designed a digipack to compliment this. The digipack for the album is designed and presented as packaging for a type of medication or tablet. The box art contains all the expected details for the packaging of a tablet including dosage, warnings, ingredients and various dates of expiration. The main colour scheme of the digipak is that of white and blue. Both of these are very "medical colours" in that they are the colours that are associated with the likes of hospitals as well as sharing the same house style with real life medicine packaging.

More interesting however is the packaging of the CD. Once the box is open the CD is presented in plastic case covered in a layer of foil, representing that of a pill. To access the Cd requires the person to break the foil in order to extract the disc and is therefore not just for the appearance. This type of packaging offers more interaction for the consumer as it is also further compliments the theme of the album and digipak design. So it is here that it provides advantages as it offers a more engaging experience for the consumer opposed to a standard plastic case with the disc inside. The design of the packaging help it to attract more people as it stands out from other album cases. It also helps to identify the artist as the digipak is as abstract as the music produced by the band. A disadvantage of the digipak however is the fact that once the foil is breached you can never seal it again, this leads to the potential of damaging the disc as it offers no real protection, therefore on a practical level there are flaws - these are however largely outweighed by the advantages offered by the style and design of the digipak.

The next digipak hugely differs from the one produced by Spiritualized. This is the digipak is for the album "AM" by "Arctic Monkeys". Compared to the previous design it is quite simple in appearance but this may make it more effective as the cover is used to establish a link between the album and the song. The leading song for the album is titled "Do i wanna know" which was released as a single prior to the album. The video features several lines which wave in correspondence to the playing of the various instruments. In the video the image of the cover is often present and this therefore acts as a link between the album and the song. This helps to add an identity to the song as well as construct a house style in which the band can then use for their other products.

The digipak is otherwise pretty standard in that on the back it contains the names of all the songs included in their running order as well as the name of the band. When opened it also contains a photo of the band members together, further reinforcing the connection between band song and album. Although a lot simpler this digipak relies more on the already established fanbase and the assosiation between the house style "logo" and the products.

The photo of the band also matches the style of the album cover by being in black and white and fading into the rest of the cover. It shows all the band members clearly and together so easy association can be made.

When I Was Your Man Lyrics Analysis

Same bed but it feels just a little bit bigger now
Experienced a break up – is now alone
Our song on the radio but it don't sound the same
Used to bring happiness as it was “their” song Now she’s gone it doesn’t hold the same meaning
When our friends talk about you, all it does is just tear me down
Cause my heart breaks a little when I hear your name
Feelings of sadness when she’s mentioned
It all just sounds like oooooh.
Hmmm... Too young, too dumb to realize
Lists his flaws – why she left him
That I should 've bought you flowers
Needed to buy her gifts
And held your hand
Needed to be more intimate/loving
Should 've gave you all my hours
Needed to use all his free time with her
When I had the chance
The chance is now gone – she’s gone
Take you to every party
Cause all you wanted to do was dance
Do things she wanted to do, try his best to please her/make her happy
Now my baby's dancing
She’s finally able to go to parties
But she's dancing with another man
But now it’s with someone else
My pride, my ego, my needs, and my selfish ways
Lists his flaws
Caused a good strong woman like you to walk out my life
Such a good thing to happen to him has left him
Now I never, never get to clean up the mess I made, ooooooh
Doesn’t have a chance to make things better – get her back
And it haunts me every time I close my eyes
Thinks about it constantly  - regret
Although it hurts
Doesn’t like to admit it
I'll be the first to say that I was wrong
Admits the breakup was his fault
oh, I know I'm probably much too late
To try and apologize for my mistakes
Too late to stop her from leaving
But I just want you to know

I hope he buys you flowers
I hope he holds your hand
Accepts that she’s gone and that she deserves better than him
Gives you all his hours
When he has the chance
Take you to every party
Cause I remember how much you loved to dance
Do all the things I should 've done
When I was your man
Repeats what he said he should’ve done but relates it to the new boyfriend. Saying he should treat her like she deserves to be treated.
